Dear QSI International School of Bratislava Families and Friends,

It is an honor to welcome all of the new and returning families to the 2018-19 school year at QSI International School of Bratislava.  The campus looks great with green grass--this rain sure does help--sports fields and playgrounds.

In addition to new books, technology and educational materials, we have added beautiful new furniture and musical instruments--pianos, guitars, ukuleles--to the Music Room.  Now, Mr. King and Mr. Ioannis are primed and ready for truly amazing musical experiences this year.

Also, we are pleased with the new Science Laboratory above the library.  Ms. Gibbs, Mr. Plunkett and Ms. Guyer are excited to create hands-on learning experiences for the middle and secondary students.

Most of all, though, we are most proud of our new and returning teachers.  These caring and passionate educators have carefully planned out a challenging and enriching year of learning for boys and girls of all ages.

Finally, please join us on Saturday, 8 September for our Annual Back-to-School Picnic, supported and organized by the Parent Support Group.  This is a great time to meet other parents and enjoy the wonderful diversity that is QSI International School of Bratislava.  More information can be found inside this newsletter.

That's all for now...have a great week!

Kind regards,

Daniel Blaho, Director
QSI International School of Bratislava

Our 3-Year-Old children are settling very nicely. We’ve been busy getting to know each other as well as the daily school routine. The children have been having a lot of fun. They have been busy exploring many sensory activities as well as playing with water, arts and crafts, playing outside and cooking. We are so excited and looking forward to a great year with all our children.

                                        LOWER ELEMENTARY NEWS
The 6 year olds have started the year off with some fun word work and activities.  During reading, small groups are set up so that children have the opportunity to work on individual skills and practice spelling.  Some children get to build the spelling words out of playdough, while others stamp them.  Careful, vowels are different colors!  With so many different activities going on, the teacher is free to help individuals learn letters and sound in order to set a solid reading base.  These 6's will be amazing readers in no time!

This week the 9YOs have started their amazing interactive notebooks in reading and writing. The focus in reading is on Story Vocabulary - plot, setting, complications, antagonist and protagonist. The focus in writing is to eliminate boring, overused words and replace them with vivid verbs that "show" and don’t "tell" about an action. The students color, cut and glue their way through learning!

Fall Sports 2018-2019

Welcome to hopefully another fantastic year of Fall sports. We have lots of new students which in turn leads to lots of great athletes. We will start the year with boys and girls soccer as well as girls HS volleyball.

Mrs.Lundberg, our 10 yo teacher, will be coaching the high school girls volleyball team again, and this first week of practice she had 14 girls come to play!

Coach Slahor and Coach Pavol will be coaching the boys middle and high school soccer teams. From the number of interested students the high school team will have plenty of players, and we have now added a middle school team.  We are looking for more interested players age 11-13 to start with the team on Monday.

Lastly, our girls high school soccer team has started again as well. We are short on numbers but so far we have 7 girls, so again any interested student athletes who would like to play high school soccer please come to practice on Monday. All girls ages 12 and up are welcome to join.

Looking forward to another successful year….and as always, GO BEARS!

                                        SECONDARY NEWS

SAT Club Beginning Soon!

Many of our secondary students will be taking the SAT test at some time during their Sec 3 or Sec 4 years.  We will be organizing the SAT Club to help prepare for these tests. The students will use Khan Academy on computers or their devices to practice for the tests. They will have a chance to share challenging problems, discuss solutions, and improve their test taking skills. Mrs. Plunkett will lead this club. Students will meet during a lunch period each week. The day is yet to be determined. Stay tuned for more information at our Club Assembly coming soon.

            ¡Español, empezamos!
QSI is now offering Spanish and it has been a success! From students who came to the class because they want to understand popular dancing music to native speakers who want to improve their grammar and vocabulary. The language of Cervantes is definitely popular nowadays, and how cool will it be to learn about  futbol and Shakira and have a siesta and a fiesta. In class, it's delightful to enjoy the 5 years old kids who are truly amazed when they have to reproduce the sound of the double R, and 6-8 year old children who cannot stop laughing at the sound of their names in Spanish. Teaching is always a pleasure to me, but having students who not only engage in apps in order to be better everyday but who also come to class with interesting words and requests for translations of the most popular songs, is simply a delight. La vida es maravillosa en el QSI!
                                        ART NEWS
            Art Attack!
The QSIB art program is already creating some amazing projects for the 2018-2019 school year!
Elementary students have been learning about warm and cool colours, then applying this to handmade painted sketchbooks and paper-collaged quilt pieces. Stay tuned for our final community-wide rainbow quilt to be displayed!

Middle school and Secondary students are exploring collage techniques using various papers, pictures, and magazines to create unique background surfaces. Next they will create a self-portrait to layer on top, either by tracing their profile, spray painting a stenciled portrait, or using contour lines of their faces drawn onto acetate.

We look forward to seeing the final masterpieces of these budding artists!
                                        MUSIC NEWS

Everything starts with the Treble Clef…
Sharps, flats, time signature and note values were part of the introduction lessons of this academic year. Basic music theory for the younger musicians, and more advanced for the older ones, is meant to build strong foundations for their future music development. During this week students of elementary school were evaluated on this basic music theory knowledge, since this is a tool they will use throughout the academic year for ear-training, solfège, singing and instrument performing.
