"Roots & Shoots"
“The mission of the Jane Goodall Institute Roots & Shoots program is to foster respect and compassion for all living things, to promote understanding of all cultures and beliefs and to inspire each individual to take action to make the world a better place for people, animals and the environment.”
Popularity in the Roots & Shoots program has soared at the QSI International School of Dili, with the number of middle school and secondary participants quadrupling in the space of a year. The year kicked off with Ms. Trudiann Dale speaking to the entire middle and secondary school body about animals native to Timor Leste, and their fragile ecosystems. There were discussions about environmental stewardship and how we can make a difference for the animals in the community in which we live.
The Dili Roots & Shoots group has decided to continue some of the successful projects that were begun the previous year, such as supporting local orphanages, funding a school dormitory, and providing supplies for single mothers and their children at a local safe house. They are working toward getting some projects off the ground that will also improve Timor Leste for the animals and for the environment.
Some of the fundraising projects planned for this school year include:
Australian Film: Roots & Shoots will support the Australian Embassy as it brings the film "Oddball" to Timor. On the QSI International School of Dili campus, children from the orphanages and women's crisis center will be invited to watch the movie, share a BBQ and enjoy some treats.
Food Drive: A food drive will be held in November and December to support the orphanages and women's crisis center.
Water Fun Day: A day of fun with water as our 'Year of Water' continues.
Valentine Sales: Roots & Shoots will sell cupcakes and cookies to help students celebrate Valentine's Day.
Coin Drive: The coin drive will support our funding of a well, or other water source, for a local school.
Movie Night for QSID students: Elementary students will enjoy an evening with a move and popcorn provided by R&S.
