Baku International School

Baku is the capital of Azerbaijan, which is located between Iran and Russia on the Caspian Sea. Azerbaijan is an Azeri-speaking country, though Russian is also a common language. Many expatriates live and work in Azerbaijan due to the oil and natural gas industries. SCHOOL: Baku International School (BIS) opened in 1994 in order to provide a quality education in English for the children of expatriates living in Azerbaijan, as well as Azeri citizens who wish their children to be educated in English. Baku International School is a private, non-profit, Preschool through Secondary IV (Grade 12), coeducational, college-preparatory day school. The school recognizes that most of the expatriate students are enrolled for only two or three years and have diverse educational backgrounds.

Baku International School is a member of Quality Schools International (QSI), a consortium of non-profit, college-preparatory, international schools following an American-style curriculum. Quality Schools International has 37 schools in 30 different countries, with headquarters in Ljubljana, Slovenia. ACCREDITATION: Baku International School, Preschool through Secondary IV, is fully accredited through Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools. Additionally, the school is a designated school for the U.S. Department of State Office of Overseas Schools (AOS).

Baku International School’s current enrollment stands at 211, with 36 in the secondary. Students attending the school represent 33 nationalities, including 21% from Azerbaijan, 13% from the United States, 10% from Turkey, and 8% from the United Kingdom.

Baku International School offers a comprehensive program for college preparation, and all Secondary I-IV (Grades 9-12) academic courses are college-preparatory. Instruction is in English. Intensive English courses offer a support system for those students who require it. Advanced Placement (AP) courses and examinations are offered, including on-campus Advanced Placement classes in Mathematics, Science, Literature, Technology and History. Students have access to a full range of Advanced Placement classes online through QSI Virtual School (QVS).

Baku International School believes in a personalized approach to instruction, leading to mastery of clearly defined objectives, within a positive and enjoyable learning environment. The school offers a challenging academic curriculum for students from Preschool through Secondary IV (Grade 12).

The school employs two administrative personnel, a guidance counselor, twenty-seven full- time teachers, eighteen paraprofessionals, and a librarian. The average class size within the secondary school is seven students.

Teachers evaluate mastery of each essential unit with an A or B. B represents mastery at a sufficiently high level, and A represents mastery at a sufficiently high level with the student consistently demonstrating higher-order thinking skills. Mediocre or poor work resulting in Cs and Ds is not accepted, as students are required to engage in an essential unit until they achieve mastery. If a student has mastered a unit with a B evaluation, the student may wish to demonstrate a higher level of mastery at a later time, within that current school year, to change the evaluation to an A. Time periods (quarters, semesters, terms) are not evaluated; student performance for the school year is assessed on each essential unit in which a student is engaged.
