Director's Desk

We would like to thank everyone who helped make last Friday's back to school picnic a tremendous success.  The evening was a wonderful opportunity for new and returning families to get to know teachers in a relaxing environment.  Thank you to Era and Urban Roots for their contributions to the evening.

This week the middle school and secondary students are heading out on their annual retreat, where they will engage in learning outdoors and bond together as a group.  The teachers that are going are excited about sharing their subjects in a platform beyond the standard walls of the classroom.  One added treat this year is that the students from the QSI school in Kosovo will be joining our students on this retreat.  The entire middle school and secondary from Pristina (12 students!) will be joining our 90 students. Our hope is that each student will come back with a new sense of community and drive to academically excel this year.

Sketchbook in the Making

The Secondary students in art class have started to build an artist sketchbook as an ongoing tool for growth and discovery. They are learning to understand and use their sketchbook as a valuable part of their learning. The use of a sketchbook enriches students' visual vocabularies and activates the creative process. As the year goes by, the students will be able to develop their art and build in complexity until the sketchbook becomes the learning and creative experience it should be.

Saturday Soccer

We formally invite you to take part in ourFall Saturday Soccer. For 7 consecutive Saturdays children will engage in a friendly soccer league. Games will take place at the Tirana International School (TIS) soccer field. If you are interested in being part of this wonderful event, please reply to us no later than September 12, 2017 with a list of your players (maximum 10 players per team)and the registration form along with the payment.

Math Hunt

The students in Algebra have been working hard to master multi-step equations.  This week they went on a scavenger hunt to find solutions to their specific problems. Keep up the good work!!

The World Geography Class has been discussing what Tools Geographers use to study the earth. While discussing GPS, we talked about how satellites work by first drawing an outline of a land mass. In class the students had to do the same using yarn and then identified rivers as lines and cities with points (we used markers).

Did you know that during the summer TIS teachers took part in the Albanian Annual Cricket match?  The Albanian Annual Cricket Match takes place every year, and is played by the expat community and Albanians. The teachers who participated this year were: Mr. Vernon, Mr. Collova, Mr, Tremblay, and Mr. Smith. This year's champions were the Lions, who beat the Eagles by a single run!  FUN FACT: Mr. Smith was the MVP in 2016.

Blogging 10's

This year, the 10 YO Class is using a site called Kidblog as a way to share ideas, reports and assignments with each other. We can share our work with our classmates, get feedback and practice creating meaningful dialogues about what we're learning.

AP Spotlight

We have started our AP Computer Science Principles class for the first time here at TIS. The students have been learning the basics of programming using MIT App Inventor. They have already created their own apps with basic functionalities, following sound principles of design and programming.

7 Literacy

For the first few weeks of school the 7s have been practicing routines for literacy time. Students participate in Daily 5 activities: Read to Self, Read to Someone, Listen to Reading, Work on Writing, and Word Work. Students learn independence and build stamina for reading and writing as they engage in these literacy activities.

The Dragonflies are learning about the five senses. To explore their sense of taste, they had a blindfolded taste test. The brave kiddos tried something sour, sweet, salty and bitter and then cast their vote which taste they liked the best. Sweet won by a landslide!
